Evolution of Story II: unravelling the hero’s journey
A one-day symposium on Thursday 23rd June 2022 – (online/hybrid) hosted by the Faculty of Business Law and Digital Technology at Solent University, Southampton, UK.
The Evolution of Story II is a one-day symposium dedicated to unravelling the hero’s journey. An exploration of the experiential in storytelling, design, technology, marketing, architecture, entertainment, retail, and other fields of practice where the user experience is of paramount importance to creative practitioners. It aims to explore the ways in which story has evolved beyond the linear, the stage and the boundaries of the screen. It will take the lid off new forms of storytelling and offer a snapshot of current practices.
Hosted by Dr Roy Hanney (Solent University) and Alison Norrington (Story Central), the symposium will take a hybrid form with all papers submitted in advance as video clips so that the live sessions can focus on dialogue and discussion. On the 23rd June, we will then meet in person online for live interactive discussion, creative action sessions and plenary sessions.
Papers presented at the symposium may be offered the opportunity to be included in a proposed edited collection (subject to contract) which hope to offer for publication to Routledge as part of their Routledge Advances in Transmedia Studies book series, edited by Matthew Freeman (Bath Spa University).

Programme Details
Breakfast Welcome (9:30-10:00)
The welcome session will include a short introduction by Alison Norrington setting up the themes and provocations for the day. Dr Roy Hanney will brief participants on the programme for the day and set up the Open Space Interactive session.
Open Space Interactive Session (10:15-11:45)
We invite participants to propose and host their own topics for discussion in an Open Space Interactive discussion, a melting pot of ideas that works to provide an opportunity for each participant to learn exactly what they feel they need and connect people with similar desires so they can learn from each other.
Creative Action Session (13:30-15:00)
Alex Bainbridge, CEO of Autoura, a digital experience platform for autonomous vehicles will be posing participants a creative challenge. Get your creative juices flowing, take the challenge, and collaborate with your peers in this fun activity. Push at the boundaries of experience design and take part in a future stories ideation session.
Plenary (15:30-16:30)
The symposium hosts Dr Roy Hanney, Alison Norrington and our keynote Professor Judith Aston will facilitate a plenary session that will explore the symposium themes and respond to the issues, challenges and provocations that arise from the participant’s video papers.
